Fortnightly or Weekly Collections?

The question of fortnightly or weekly collections comes to the surface every now and again and the Commissioners keep it under review.

Reasons for weekly collections:-

Unhygienic and unpleasant smells from rotting foodstuffs in bins for up to two weeks, especially in the summer.

.
May attract rats or other pests.

There would be no need for more than one bin in most households – saving space and cost.

Reasons against weekly collections:-

Extra cost of weekly collection – basically the same amount of refuse generated would require two collections and two trips to the Incinerator instead - very roughly it could be expected that the cost would almost double.

Many households, probably most, do not generate more than one binful of refuse in a fortnight. Therefore the extra cost of collecting half a binful every week would be of little or no benefit to them.

Please let us know if you have any strong views on this. We are here to serve you and are spending your rates money and we could change to weekly collections if that is what the majority of householders wanted. The cost of weekly collection would probably not be significant to most householders - perhaps an extra £20,000 for the Parish, that is 18 pence in the pound, equating to approximately £28 per year for the average ratepayer.

Our impression is that most people are quite happy with fortnightly collections – tell us if we are wrong about this.
