Recycling of Refuse

Arbory Parish Commissioners accept that there is a strong environmental case for the recycling of refuse and they understand that, as amounts of refuse generated increase over the years, it will also be increasingly important as a means of reducing the volume of flow of waste materials to the new Incinerator (the Energy for Waste Plant).

Kerbside collection of materials such as glass and paper is being promoted by central government as the preferred means of recycling and it is envisaged that this will be introduced in the towns by 2008. Some areas, such as Malew and Douglas, have already commenced or are about to commence kerbside collection.

DOLGE have a very interesting website on many aspects of recycling in the Isle of Man. Click here to go to this site.

There a multitude of different methods of recycling by kerbside collection but most involve the householder sorting out various types of refuse, perhaps glass, paper and tin cans, into different boxes or bags or bins and leaving them outside the house on specified days for collection in specially adapted lorries. This involves additional expense but also involves a lot of effort and discipline on the part of the householders and will only work successfully if the majority of householders are willing to participate.

Would the benefits of kerbside collection justify the additional expense? The Commissioners dont know yet but they are actively looking into the costs involved.

More importantly, would YOU be prepared to go to the bother of sorting out newspapers and bottles and cans and putting them out in separate boxes?
